Because the vast majority of people we serve are living in poverty and many have high levels of food insecurity, the Tucson Interfaith HIV/AIDS Network (TIHAN) has committed $10,000 in new food support for July, and received a gift of $20,000 from the COVID-19 Community Support Fund of the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona for the months of August and September, and we are now seeking matching funds totalling $20,000 from our supporters our supporters to cover emergency food support for the months of October and November.
In June, we conducted a needs assessment with our CarePartners (clients) living with HIV, and found that 77% of our CarePartners expressed a medium- to urgent-level of need for additional food support—over and above current food resources they have. We are very concerned to see such a high level of food insecurity.
We serve a vulnerable population of people living with HIV, complicated by poverty (84% are at or below 150% of the federal poverty level). 69% of the people we serve are ages 50+, most have underlying health issues, 56% are people of color, and most identify as LGBTQ+.
If we can raise $10,000 per month, this will allow us to provide an additional $50 per person per month to the 200 people living with HIV who are most in need of additional food support.
Your support towards this goal of providing food support to people in need is greatly appreciated!
