Because the vast majority of people we serve are living in poverty, the Tucson Interfaith HIV/AIDS Network (TIHAN) is a qualifying charity for the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit. HIV can be a devastating disease. Today, medications and doctors can often help keep a body healthy, but HIV stigma can take a toll. No one should have to deal with an HIV diagnosis alone. When you support TIHAN, you're providing a system of support services that help people like Tim. Like almost all of the people we serve, Tim is living below the federal poverty level, doing his best to get by.
When Tim found out in 1986 he had HIV, he says he didn’t know how long he had to live, just that HIV was his death sentence. “That was more than 30 years ago, and I’m still here. But I haven’t survived this long on my own. I’m here in part because of meds and also people who donate to programs like TIHAN who have helped me survive. You give me hope and help.”
Tim’s been involved with TIHAN for more than 20 years. “I’ve counted on TIHAN for support in many ways. I will always remember TIHAN finding someone to do last rites for my late partner… But most of TIHAN’s support has been focused on helping me live and be independent. You helped me get eyeglasses so I could see clearly again. You’ve provided me with Living Well classes, and Eating Well classes, and Planning Well classes too, all very helpful, keeping me focused on being the best me. I go to Poz Café as often as I can. In addition to great food and social support, I am overwhelmed with gratitude seeing the outpouring of generosity from so many people and faith communities. You remind me that there are still good people in this world.”
